How does Laser Hair Removal work?

Using highly concentrated energy, Laser Hair Removal targets hair follicles and emits pulses of light that stop the growth of the hair. The complete Laser Hair Removal process requires a series of treatments, but results can start to be seen after the first treatment. Over the course of one to three weeks, the treated hair falls out. With every treatment, fewer and fewer hairs will grow back, leaving you with smooth skin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Laser Hair Removal feel like?

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different. Some customers say it feels like a rubber band snapping against the skin and others compare it to a light prick of a needle. Compared to waxing and other forms of hair removal, it’s not so bad. If you do find it uncomfortable, our staff of healthcare professionals can prescribe a numbing cream for the skin.

What is the difference between IPL technology and a laser?

IPL stands for “intense pulsed light” and it’s not a laser. While IPLs can be effective for some cosmetic procedures, our experience supports the more powerful, yet safer and faster use of the laser for a more permanent solution to hair removal.

Can I be sure the hair will not grow back?

Hair removal from a destroyed hair follicle is permanent. However, people who undergo hair removal can expect that some hair in the targeted area will grow back.

Over time, it is possible to treat the area again to reduce the number of hairs that regrow. In some cases, it may even be possible to eliminate all hair. Whether or not hair grows back depends on numerous factors, including the type of hair that regrows and the technology used to remove the hair.

LuminaSkin uses LightSheer® DESIRE™ to ensure long-lasting results.

Is Laser Hair Removal treatment different dependent on your skin tone?

Laser hair removal uses highly-concentrated beams of light to destroy your hair follicle, the source of where new hair roots and grows. To reach the follicle, a laser is targeted at the pigment in your hair. Traditionally, it was only possible for a laser to focus if there was a stark contrast between your hair and your skin—making the optimal candidate for laser hair removal someone with dark hair and fair skin.

Fortunately, improvements in technology have made laser hair removal for dark skin tones not just possible, but highly effective. Enhanced lasers can be used in a much more precise way to safely and effectively remove hair from medium, dark, and deep skin tones.

Is Laser Hair Removal actually permanent?

Laser hair removal is one of the most permanent forms of hair removal currently on the market. It’s also one of the only FDA-approved technolgies that can directly target the source of hair growth beneath your skin. Your hair—including unwanted patches on your underarms, chest and bikini line—grows from hair follicles located under the surface of the skin. Laser hair removal uses minimally invasive laser technology to gently target hair growth precisely at the follicle.

Pulses of light render the follicle incapable of producing more hair, meaning you will stop growing hair in the areas that have been treated. Most patients see results immediately after their first laser hair removal session; however, treated hair continues to fall out for one to three weeks following each treatment. Depending on the size of the treated area, as well as hair and skin type, the number of treatments you may need to target all unwanted hair follicles may vary.

Is Laser Hair Removal the best permanent solution for hair removal?

Alternative hair removal procedures, such as waxing or shaving, only remove the hair above the surface of your skin, meaning that hair grows back quickly. IPL or “intense pulsed light” treatments can take longer to complete than laser treatments and don’t guarantee results for all skin types. The ease and effectiveness of laser hair removal make it the best hair reduction solution.

All of our gentle procedures are conducted by a staff of highly trained medical professionals and use the best-in-class laser technology, LightSheer® DESIRE™.

LightSheer® DESIRE™ technology was developed to minimize patient discomfort, speed up treatment time, and produce the most successful results on virtually any skin color and hair type, so let us help you reach your skin goals!

How many sessions will I need to permanently remove my hair?

Everyone has a different amount of hair, and everyone’s hair grows at a different rate. To get rid of all your unwanted hair in a given area, we need to schedule multiple sessions in accordance with your hair growth cycles, but most people can finish their initial treatment within 4-6 sessions.

When the sessions are done, you will enjoy the numerous benefits of a life without unwanted hair. Your skin will be healthier because you won’t experience the constant irritation of shaving, waxing, or using depilatory creams. You will be able to wear the clothing you want without always worrying about when you need to shave. The benefits will extend to your budget as well, because you won’t need to spend money on hair removal products.

How does Laser Hair Removal work on different hair densities and thicknesses?

Hair type refers to both your hair density and thickness. There are a variety of hair types, and the type of hair you’re aiming to treat will largely determine the course of your laser hair removal treatment and needs.

  1. Fine hair — Fine hair has the smallest diameter of the three hair types, which means the individual strands of hair are the thinnest. Fine hair generally creates less of a contrast with the skin, making it more difficult to pinpoint.
  2. Medium hair — Medium hair has a larger diameter than fine hair, allowing it to be spotted easier by laser technology. Medium hair also tends to have more pigment per strand, meaning laser hair removal can heat the follicle more easily.
  3. Coarse hair — Coarse hair has the largest diameter of the three hair types, which means the hair is thickest and easiest to target. Coarse hair also has the most pigment per strand, making it the quickest to heat with laser technology.
How long do the sessions take?

For many areas of the body, this treatment can be completed in less than half an hour. For large areas such as the legs, you probably won’t need to spend more than two hours in the medspa, maximum. When you shave, you might spend 15 extra minutes in the shower. To maintain hairless skin, you could end up shaving over 3900 times in the next 25 years! If it takes you 15 minutes each time, that’s 58,500 minutes you’re wasting!

The amount of time you will spend using depilatory creams is about the same as shaving, and the process needs to be repeated with the same frequency. Waxing is done less frequently, but the results aren’t permanent, and you need to factor in time to drive to your appointment. When you consider that you only need around 6 initial sessions and one or two touch-ups every year to maintain smooth skin with laser treatments, you can see how much time this method saves.
